Talking to your teenager about safe driving

On Behalf of | Oct 7, 2021 | Uncategorized |

Parents in Texas have a lot to be worried about when their teenagers start driving. Car accidents are a huge concern for everyone and the leading cause of death among teens. However, avoiding driving practice could make matters worse since teens need to get a lot of experience to become good drivers.

Help your teen understand the dangers of driving

It’s important to discuss the real dangers of driving with your teen in an open and honest way. While it’s frightening to look at the crash statistics, teens should understand how dangerous driving really is. Make sure that your teen understands how easily car accidents can happen and the responsibility that they have to protect themselves, their passengers, other drivers and pedestrians.

Be real about distracted driving

Distracted driving is a huge problem, especially when drivers use smartphones and infotainment systems in their cars. Distraction is even more dangerous for teen drivers since they are just learning how to drive. Operating the vehicle controls and navigating different roadways is not second nature to teens, so it may be best to keep any and all distractions powered off.

Make sure you are setting the right example

Parents know that kids often pick up their bad habits, like it or not. While you’re teaching your teen how to drive, make sure that you’re being the model of safety. Don’t set a bad example by driving over the speed limit or using your smartphone behind the wheel.

Liability for teen car accidents

Teen drivers may be involved in car accidents that are not their fault. If your teen was injured in a crash, you may want to file a claim against the at-fault driver. A personal injury claim may be used to pursue financial compensation for medical expenses and property damage.
